Digital Landscape with Mike Humphries

Today was our first day to go plein air painting at the Arboretum in Arcadia, CA and our instructor is the amazing Mike Humphries. He painted a demo that morning, emphasizing on painting background first and foreground last. Painting with opposite elements was also a key factor in his approach. Soft against hard, cool against warm, saturated against de-saturated, light against dark. I also noticed that he would push or pull certain objects to make for a more clarified painting, even if it wasn't true to what was really in front of him. The above painting was my work for the day. Objective: Watch a movie, preferably in color! Pause the movie that has an interesting sense of color, value, and composition. You have 10 minutes to paint the entire scene. Go!

Every now and then the ACCD guys will head out to paint some landscapes. On this occasion Mr. Pavin Chaisua landed us a pretty sweet spot under the Colorado Bridge in Pasadena.

Digital Plein Air

Got my first Macbook Pro and decided to take out for a plein air painting test run at my local starbucks.

Can you see the face????!!!!!

The objective for our first project of Image & Idea was to create a portrait of whomever we wanted. But there was a catch, no human faces!!! The only elements that we could incorporate into the portrait were objects from nature. I chose a red rock canyon side as my muse.

Chapter 1-2

The assignment for this ongoing 4th term project is to re-illustrate Diana Wynne Jone's classic book, "Howl's Moving Castle." We have to work from the ground up in creating color scripts, character designs, and color keys.
